The bulk of it, Why I am bulking!

When I first tell people I am bulking now, I get some really weird looks.  That is completely understandable, because most people do not realize what I mean when I say I am bulking.  Most would assume that it is something like this…bulking

In reality, this is so far away from what I will actually be doing. What I am doing is commonly referred to as a clean bulk and looks more like this…

Yes, that is right, I will be eating the same foods that I always eat.  The only thing that will change is the food quantity.  So with this concepts comes a whole slew of questions that people have.  I hope to answer a few of them in this blog, if you are left with questions after that, just post them in the comments below and I will answer them.

What is the reason for bulking?

The main reason, is that I want to be strong and I want to gain muscle.  Before you get all bent out of shape, no my goal is not to compete in a bodybuilding show (as of now) nor do i think that I will look like the awesome Dana Linn Bailey (could I be that lucky?) , but I do want to have muscle, look toned (I know there is no such thing) and fit.  When you are trying to lose weight is is nearly impossible to gain muscle,  your body just doesn’t work that way.  So in an attempt to pick up a little bit more muscle, I am bulking.

What benefits do you see from bulking?

Well besides the obvious benefit of looking better after I come back down from a bulk, I also think my body needs a rest.   For the last 4 years I have been hitting it super hard in the gym, working toward leaning out, and have made amazing progress.  As time goes on, it gets harder and harder to see results, and maintain progress. While I am bulking, I am also cutting back on cardio.   My body just needs a re-set.

Are you going to be eating what you want, whenever you want?

Definitely not,  I will still follow a strict meal plan, and will still be eating a clean diet.  Just to put this into perspective, my current meal plan includes jasmine rice, peanut butter, chicken breast, extra lean ground beef, egg whites, green beans, cream of rice, and ezekial bread.  Yep that is it.  I will however be having one cheat meal a week.

What would you recommend for someone who is wanting to bulk?

Make sure you have a plan.  This isn’t just about adding a ton more calories,  there is a systematic way of doing it.  While you will gain some fat while bulking, the goal isn’t to get fat, it is to gain muscle.  So your calorie intake really has to be on point.

After the bulk, then what?

After the bulk, I will be leaning back out, hopefully looking better and feeling better.
